Making Cheap Pasta Meals Can Really Stretch Your Budget!

Everyone’s budget is being stretched to capacity these days, and of course grocery prices are a big part of that. Unlike so many other luxuries you just can’t go without eating no matter how much it costs! So preparing cheap meals that are still tasty and nutritious is a challenge for many families but one that can be met if you put some time and effort into it.

For one thing, consider how you cook or prepare food now. Many cheap meals are made simply by eliminating some high cost ingredients or substituting them with something more affordable. For example if you have a recipe that calls for wine, do you use something very expensive or the most affordable table wine you can find? A lot of cheap meals can be made by using inexpensive ingredients this way, if you think about it. The store brand flour or sugar or mayonnaise or cheese is just as tasty when used in recipes and can often be a third less the cost of national brands.

Preparing cheap meals often means fixing things yourself rather than buying them already prepared. Usually a cake mix and the other ingredients needed to finish it is only two or three dollars total, whereas one from the bakery, even the bakery department of the supermarket, is going to be three times that. A rotisserie chicken that’s already cooked can be half over again the raw chicken that you put on your own rotisserie at home. Virtually any dinner or lunch item that you purchase that is already cooked, chopped, or otherwise prepared is going to cost more. So it might take some extra work to prepare these cheap meals but you’re saving a good one-third and sometimes even one-half from your grocery bill.

Making cheap meals might also mean using ingredients to fill them out or bulk them up so that you can cut back on expensive meat. For instance one great standard item in many cheap meals is soup or stew which you can easily make in a crock pot with a jar of prepared gravy and some leftover vegetables, or make on your stovetop with some broth and a few added seasonings. This might not be much of a dinner itself but if you have a bowl of soup made from leftover vegetables before you actual meal, you’ll be bound to eat less of those more expensive items. So cheap meals might mean just filling up on cheaper elements before moving on to the more expensive ones.

There are many places online and in print that will give you ideas for cheap meals but they do of course usually take a little bit more time and effort than the more expensive and readily available meals and items at the supermarket. But considering the amount of money you can save in a month and a year by preparing cheap meals you probably realize that they’re definitely worth that time and effort after all!

Making Cheap Pasta Meals Everyone today is looking for ways to stretch their household budget and of course groceries are a big part of that. But no matter how expensive food gets, we just can’t stop eating! So finding ways to cut back on that expense is important, and having cheap pasta meals is one good way to do just that. There are many options available to families and individuals today and learning just a few quick tips and recipes means that you’ll be well on your way to incorporating those cheap pasta meals into your everyday menu planning.

Many people think of pasta as being spaghetti and not much else but remember that there are many options available to you when considering cheap pasta meals. For instance lasagna is one such choice; if you make it with a thick tomato sauce you can use a minimal amount of meat if any at all. One great thing about lasagna for cheap pasta meals is that you can usually freeze it in individual servings to be easily reheated later so you can get many meals from one pan. A small salad or some breadsticks can help to round out the meal.

Other ideas for cheap pasta meals include any type of noodle casserole. You might not like tuna casserole and many people don’t, but there is a wide variety of chicken and beef casseroles that can be made rather easily using egg noodles or any other variety. Very often these casseroles include only a few ingredients and can even be made with leftovers. Usually if you add some cheese or a creamy soup such as cream of mushroom or cream of broccoli you can get some great but cheap pasta meals that are very tasty. You can make these even more affordable by omitting the meat altogether and adding broccoli, cauliflower, and other vegetable options. This also makes them that much healthier.

Remember too that cheap pasta meals might just require some imagination. You can steam some vegetables and add them to a tomato sauce and serve those over any type of noodles or rice. You can do the same with leftover meatloaf – reheat it and then crumble it into pasta sauce and serve it over boiled noodles. A good way to prepare cheap pasta meals from leftovers is to add sour cream to cheesy dishes and bake it; for pasta dishes you can add some additional pasta sauce and bake those as well so that it’s not dry and tasteless the way you would think of leftovers being.

Remember that cheap pasta meals aren’t always as nutritious as meals with leafy green vegetables so don’t rely on them to make up your entire menu but instead use them as alternatives to help round out your budget. You might also need to use your imagination to get away from the standard spaghetti and meatballs. By doing so you’ll find that cheap pasta meals are a great way to stretch that budget.

When trying to cut down your grocery bill you may find it helpful to actually sit down and make some cheap meal plans for the week. This doesn’t mean that your family is going to be stuck with some rigid schedule like a school lunch menu, but it does mean that you’re going to have the food you need so you’ll have fewer trips to the overly expensive convenience store, and should have less waste by way of leftovers as well. But when making your cheap meal plans there are some things that you want to remember to do this effectively.

One of those things that many people overlook when making their cheap meal plans is the amount of snacks their family eats throughout the week. Planning on three meals a day is one thing but many people enjoy a good snack throughout the day. What will everyone munch on at night when you’re watching television? It does no good to prepare some cheap meal plans only to have everyone reaching for expensive bags of chips or gourmet cheese to nibble on at night. Making snacks a part of your grocery list is a tremendous help in this regard when wanting to stick to a budget. Get some popcorn or make up your own trail mix or something else that’s very affordable. Fruit and vegetables of course are excellent choices and fit well into your cheap meal plans. Cut up a few different pieces of fruit and share it with someone else so you have some variety. Use hummus or peanut butter to dress up your vegetables. These are very affordable and healthy options.

Another way to include snacks into your cheap meal plans is to make sure you have some leftovers that are stored in single serving containers so that when someone gets hungry between meals they can have some soup or stew, or a bowl of chili, or two people can split a pot pie, and so on. When you make your cheap meal plans for the week it’s good to also include your plans for those leftovers so that they can be incorporated into a new meal or can be reused in some way. If you make a chicken one night, plan on using the leftovers in some soup or a pot pie, using a frozen pie crust and some jars of gravy. If you do have steak, plan on cooking the leftovers in a little bit of oil and adding them to a salad or putting them in a rolled up sandwich.

When making up your cheap meal plans for the week it’s good to plan on everything, including snacks, breakfast, and those leftovers. Forgetting these simple things is a surefire way to run out of necessary items so that you need to visit the expensive convenience store. Your cheap meal plans are only going to work if they’re complete plans for all your eating needs throughout the week.
