With food prices going up the way they have been lately, it’s no wonder that people today are trying to figure how to make quick cheap meals that are still tasty and healthy as well. If we had all the time in the world to read through recipe books and chop and prepare vegetables that would be great but usually we need to prepare meals as quickly as possible. Unfortunately that means that very often we rely on prepared food from the supermarket or items that are already cooked, but these are not exactly quick cheap meals as they often cost twice as much as food you prepare yourself. So what to do?

Many people want quick cheap meals to just happen; they don’t want to put forth the effort it takes to plan and prepare these meals, but usually if you find out what’s involved you realize that it’s not as difficult as you might expect. For example many people find that soup, stew, chili, and casseroles that you make at home are quick cheap meals that everyone enjoys. You can usually make these up on the weekend and freeze them in individual portions so that they can easily be reheated throughout the week for lunch or dinner. It’s not that difficult to make up homemade soup, stew, chili or a casserole as these usually require only a few simple ingredients and some seasoning. You don’t want to spend your Saturday over a hot stove but you can set aside a weeknight to do the same if you want. By making quick cheap meals all at once you get your week’s cooking out of the way and have something that’s readily available for the rest of the week.

Another way that preparation comes into play when you want to make quick cheap meals is that you do need to be aware of what your local supermarket is offering for a discount. Most supermarkets have their weekly circulars available online so it’s not that difficult to quickly browse through these before you leave the house. Do they have two-for-one sales or online coupons for items you need? Is there a particular variety of meat that’s on sale so that you can stock up?

When you check the circulars and sales you can then actually put some thought into what quick cheap meals you’re going to prepare throughout the week – when chickens are on sale, you can put one on the rotisserie and plan on chicken soup or stew with the leftovers. By putting a little bit of this type of planning into your quick cheap meals you can cut your grocery bill by a third or even more.

Remember that quick cheap meals don’t need to be tasteless and they don’t need to be without your favorite ingredients either. They do however require a little bit of planning and preparation. But in the end when you’ve saved so much on your grocery bill you’ll see that it’s worth it!

Do you believe that statement – cooking cheap meals is not that hard? Some people would argue that point, assuming that to prepare meals that aren’t expensive you need to clip coupons, buy things in bulk, measure every single ingredient carefully, and be standing over a stove for hours. In reality cooking cheap meals can be one of the easiest things you can do if you know how to do it. There are many recipes that include very affordable ingredients and that can be assembled very easily.

Usually cooking cheap meals is no more difficult than cooking regular meals if you just use your imagination for how you can use more affordable ingredients in place of the more expensive ones. If you’re making some type of beef casserole, substitute chicken or turkey. You can make chicken tacos or burritos as well. If you want to have a steak, buy a cheaper cut and marinate it overnight or use some seasonings to dress it up a bit. When cooking cheap meals you may need to make up for some lost taste because you’re using ingredients that aren’t as rich as you’re accustomed to.

Cooking cheap meals may also mean some creativity and imagination. Think of ingredients that are less expensive and how you can use them every day. Vegetables are usually cheaper than most meats so how can you use more vegetables in place of meats? A good hearty vegetable stew can be made in large batches and frozen in single servings. You can make vegetarian lasagna or other pasta dishes if you use a thick tomato sauce. When cooking cheap meals you just need to consider some new ideas for how you can omit these more expensive items and ingredients.

We all need to watch our spending today; there’s no doubt that with rising prices on virtually everything there’s no part of our budget that we can ignore. And while you may think you’re doing all you can to be careful of your grocery budget there may be additional ways to make your normal recipes into cheap recipes without sacrificing the taste or the quality of these recipes.

Substituting cheaper items is one obvious way to make your recipes into cheap recipes. Think about the cuts of meat you typically buy – are they the most expensive? Usually cheaper cuts work just as well when you’re incorporating them into any recipe. You might not like the taste of store brand mayonnaise on a sandwich but when you put it into a salad or other recipe it works just as well. By using cheaper brands of ingredients you have cheap recipes that usually taste just the same.

Using less of the expensive ingredients is another way to adjust your recipes to cheap recipes. As an example you might have a chicken casserole recipe that calls for so much rice and so much chicken. By doubling the rice and cutting the amount of chicken in half you have a very tasty dish that is going to fill you up but cost a lot less because the chicken of course is more expensive than the rice. When making spaghetti sauce you can cut down on the amount of meat and add more tomatoes; do the same for chili. You might need to make other ingredients but usually this is a quick way to adjust so that you’re using cheap recipes based on your original recipes.

Casseroles are always a mainstay when searching for cheap recipes. Usually these use very inexpensive ingredients such as pasta, rice, or noodles and a small amount of meat along with some vegetables. As with other recipes you might need to adjust the amounts of some ingredients. A good recipe for a chicken casserole calls for a creamy soup such as cream of mushroom to be added to rice and chicken. You can cut the amount of chicken down and add broccoli or peas to bulk it up and make it more filling. Most recipes are like this – cut down on the meat and add other ingredients and you have cheap recipes without sacrificing flavor.

Sometimes the best cheap recipes are the ones you make up yourself. Think of your own budget and what you spend the most money on at the supermarket. If it’s meat then you know you need to cut back some. Buy cheaper cuts – chicken thighs rather than breasts, for instance. Use stuffing or steamed vegetables to make up for reducing the amount of meat you use in any of your cheap recipes and your family won’t miss it so much. Give it some thought as to what cheap recipes you can make on your own and you’ll find you might even enjoy the process!
